The conformal covariance of massless field equations gives rise to first order symmetries in spacetimes admitting conformal Killing vectors. Tensors satisfying generalistions of the conformal Killing equation can be similarly used to construct higher-order symmetry operators. I shall review these generalisations to totally symmetric or totally skew tensors and introduce generalisations to tensors of mixed symmetry. I shall show how these generalised conformal Killing-Yano tensors can be applied to the solution of Maxwell's equations in algebraically-special space-times, and show the relation to the scalar Debye potential scheme.
