A Brief Introduction to Ghostview

Suggestion. To learn the basic use of Ghostview as quickly as possible, obtain a PostScript document (for example, David Angell's MATH1231 algebra notes) and try out the following operations yourself.

This introduction refers to Ghostview version 1.5, June 1997, which is currently installed on sigma at the School of Mathematics, University of New South Wales.

Window size. Depending on the size of the document and the size of your terminal screen, Ghostview will produce a window which may or may not include the whole of the requested image. You can alter the size and shape of the window in the normal manner. See also "If the window does not display the whole page" below.

Changing the page orientation. Occasionally the page may initially be displayed sideways or upside down. In this case click on the fourth box from the left in the top row, marked with one of the options "Portrait", "Landscape", "Upside-Down" or "Seascape", and use the menu to select a different option.

Moving through the document. To go to the next page either press "ENTER" or click the left mouse button on the box marked >> at the left of the window. To go to the previous page either hold down "SHIFT" and press "ENTER", or left-click on <<. To go to a particular page, left-click on the list of page numbers below the << and >> boxes. (For MATH1231 notes and some others, four pages are displayed at a time. To find, for example, page 13 you will need to click on 16.)

If the window does not display the whole page move the mouse to any point of the document image, click and hold the right button, move in any direction and release the button.

Magnifying part of the document. At any point in the document image, click and hold the centre mouse button, move it until a rectangle appears including the area you want magnified, and release the button. A menu will pop up giving the available levels of magnification. Click on the desired level and a new window will appear containing the magnified region. If the window does not contain all of the requested image, either increase the size of the window, or move around using the right mouse button as described in the previous paragraph.

Obtaining a hard copy. To print the whole document, left-click on "Print All". Type the required print command in the Dialog Box and then press "ENTER" (or click on "Print"). In order to save paper, please use double-sided printing whenever possible.

To print part of the document, first mark the pages you want by moving the mouse to the list of page numbers (left hand side of the window) and clicking the centre or right button. If you change your mind, click again to unmark the page. When you are sure you have selected the right pages, left-click on "Print Marked" and use the Dialog Box as described above.

When you have finished, place the mouse anywhere in the Ghostview window and press "q" (or choose "Quit" from the "File" menu).
